Hi, I'm Myron Kandel, head of New Hampshire's Initiative for Corporate Responsibility and Investor Protection.
I'm here at Daniel Webster College in Nashua. We're about to begin the first program in our series of interviews with the major Presidential candidates in cooperation with New Hampshire Public Television.
Our focus is on business ethics, along with corporate responsibility and investor protection - issues that are vital to the health of the nation's economy and the welfare of the American people.
But as important as these issues are, they have never been dealt with at any length during previous Presidential campaigns. My goal is to change that by sitting down with the candidates and talking to them about how they plan to protect the interests of American investors.
I am pleased to have as my first guest Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas. Mike Huckabee was born 55 years ago in Hope, Arkansas. He became a prominent Baptist minister and first ran for public office in 1992 as the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. He lost that race by a wide margin, while another boy from Hope, named Bill Clinton, was being elected President.
But a year later, Mike Huckabee won a special election for Lieutenant Governor, becoming only the second Republican to hold that office since Reconstruction. He then was elected to a full term, and became Governor in 1996 upon the resignation of the incumbent. He won two full four-year terms in 1998 and 2002. Two years ago, Time magazine named him one of the five best Governors in the United States.
Early this year, he announced plans to run for President, a decision that met with some skepticism and a lot of jokes.
But since then, Mike Huckabee has shown that he is no joke. He has addressed the issues, and his campaign is being taken very seriously.
Mike Huckabee, Republican candidate for President, welcome to this edition of More Than Money: Myron Kandel and the Presidential Candidates.
Governor….
